Cube Monkeys (Pt. 2)
I work in hardware and software client support and have something to say…
When an IT person asks you for your password, they are not asking so they can get into your stuff. As IT people they can already get into your stuff. “Your stuff” would include all files on your local hard drive(s) and on the network, every website you’ve ever been to and also your email. 99% of the time you are being asked for your password so that the tech can login to your computer as you to fix a problem you called them about. Maybe you’re getting an upgrade and the tech is configuring the new PC for you.
You would be amazed how many people don’t want to give up their password to a trusted IT person. Chances are that if you don’t give your password to the tech, you’re basically sticking a big red flag on your head that says “I’m hiding something and surf porn at lunch”. That flag then tells the tech to go back to all the server logs and scan for all activity by you. This would be done after manually changing the password that the user wouldn’t give up.
So please, if your tech support person asks you for your password, just give it to them. You can always change it to something else later.
