Cube Monkeys (Pt. 2)

Filed under: Random Thoughts — James @ 7:27 pm

I work in hardware and software client support and have something to say…

When an IT person asks you for your password, they are not asking so they can get into your stuff. As IT people they can already get into your stuff. “Your stuff” would include all files on your local hard drive(s) and on the network, every website you’ve ever been to and also your email. 99% of the time you are being asked for your password so that the tech can login to your computer as you to fix a problem you called them about. Maybe you’re getting an upgrade and the tech is configuring the new PC for you.

You would be amazed how many people don’t want to give up their password to a trusted IT person. Chances are that if you don’t give your password to the tech, you’re basically sticking a big red flag on your head that says “I’m hiding something and surf porn at lunch”. That flag then tells the tech to go back to all the server logs and scan for all activity by you. This would be done after manually changing the password that the user wouldn’t give up.

So please, if your tech support person asks you for your password, just give it to them. You can always change it to something else later.

Double Pedal Insanity Pt.5

Filed under: Gear — James @ 11:10 am

After going back and forth about how I do or do not need a double pedal, the fact still remains that I’ve always had one up until about 6 months ago. That fact alone makes my kit feel naked without one. And not having it there when I’m the middle of a tune and hear a part that requires it is frustrating for me. There has been numerous times since selling my original double pedal where without thinking about it, my left foot has wondered off the hi-hat in search of something that’s not there. It’s driving me nuts…

So as of this morning I have placed an order for a Drum Workshop 7002PT. It’s a really nice double pedal for $199 and is the closest design to the original 5000 series which I learned on. I’ve tried other brands in the same $200 price range but none of them feel quite like the DW does to me. (When I can afford it I would still love to have the special $430 5520-2 as it is the perfect setup for me since I like the hi-hat nice and close to the snare.)

So yeah, I’m looking forward to having a double pedal again. One thing is for certain though, it’s going to take a little time to get by feet back into shape!
