Music Overload!

Filed under: Listenings,New Music and Video — James @ 11:44 am

Well I don’t think I could actually ever overload on music. But I currently have so much new music that I’m having trouble deciding on what to listen to…

Yesterday saw the release of two albums that I picked up after work. One is Porcupine Tree‘s new album “Fear Of A Blank Planet”. I had originally planned on pre-ordering the album but couldn’t find anywhere online that was offering the special edition that included the bonus DVD with the 5.1 mix of the album. Well much to my delight, the local Record & Tape Traders still had a copy of the SE version left when I got there at about 6pm. The packaging and artwork are fantastic, just as I expected. I look forward to listening to this bad boy with headphones asap.

The other album that came out was a new studio effort from Fishbone entitled “Still Stuck In Your Throat”. I had no idea it was coming out until I saw it on the release board at the store. Fishbone is a band I listened to a lot in high school and after the “Give A Monkey A Brain And He’ll Swear He’s The Center Of The Universe” album, I lost interest. Although Fish is no longer on drums, maybe this new one will be a change for the better. We shall see.

The new Rush album “Snakes & Arrows” comes out on Tuesday. I managed to land an advanced copy of it last Friday and it sat there for a couple days unlistened to. A new Rush album has always been somewhat sacred for me and with the exception of officially released singles prior to release, I don’t want to hear anything more until the actual CD is in my hands. Well Allison and I decided that we couldn’t wait and we are both floored. Rush has really done it again with this one. Stellar stuff indeed! I’ve already placed my order at Rush Backstage for the MVI version and we’ll just grab a copy of the standard edition on the 1st. I’ll post more later once I have the album.

Next up is the Dance Hall Crashers. Allison got me hooked on them recently and I’m looking forward to exploring their catalog. I bought a copy of their live DVD which we watched last night and I was really impressed with all of the players. And the dual female lead vocals are rad. Both vocalists are singing in close, tight harmony almost constantly. It’s a great sound.

Another band that I’ve come across on my internet travels is a French group called Venturia. I have listened to their debut a couple of times through and it’s quite an earful. The recording process for this album must have taken a very long time because every single note is precisely placed. I am a perfectionist but these guys must have some serious OCD… and I like it. It’s not something I want to hear all the time but this kind of attention to detail is something I can appreciate. Check out the media page on their site.

Finally, I want to bring up Textures again. The “Drawing Circles” album continues to blow me away so I decided to find myself a copy of the band’s debut “Polars”. I located one used copy in town and I just started listening to that this morning on my way to work. This stuff is just killer!

Thanks Mom!

So believe it or not, after never having an actual subscription and always buying from the newsstand, I received my first issue of Modern Drummer in the mail today! This is a big deal for me because I love the magazine and have been reading it almost as long as I have been playing drums which is now that I think about it, close to 28 years now. Why I never spent the $38 to subscribe, I have no idea. So thanks mom, for the awesome xmas gift! (And a big thanks to my bro Tom for giving me his collection of the first 10 years worth of MD!)

Fortunately for me and my non-subscribing ass, I can buy the first 26 years on DVD for $139. So as soon as I can, I’m totally picking up the MD Digital Archive.
